In partnership with the Executive Director, the Board is responsible for providing strategic governance oversight for the business of the organization, including its policies, legal and fiduciary matters.

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is composed of the President, President-elect, General Secretary, the International Secretary, and Past President. The Executive Director shall be a non-voting ex-officio member. It has the authority to conduct the affairs of the Union between meetings of the Board, provided that the Executive Committee may not contradict board policy or decisions.

Council

The AGU Council is the assembly responsible for the scientific affairs of the Union. It will represent, advocate, deliberate and prioritize member issues impacting the science. It is chaired by the Union President-elect and composed of the Section Presidents and President-elects, Focus Group Chairs and Vice-Chairs, the Chairs of five committees (Publications, Meetings, Outreach, Fellows, and Honors and Recognition), and up to five appointed members. For the 2010–2012 term of service, four of these appointed members are Early Career Scientists.

Council Leadership Team

The Council Leadership Team is composed of the AGU President-elect, and a Vice-Chair and three other members elected from amongst the Council. It shall develop and oversee the Council work, define issues of importance for Council deliberation, plan the meetings of the Council and determine the draft agenda for Council meetings. The leadership team has the authority to conduct the affairs of the Council between Council meetings, provided that the leadership may not contradict Council policy or decisions.
