The Bylaws Committee is responsible for reviewing the Union's Bylaws and other governance documents and for ensuring that they are up to date, reflect current organizational practice and are consistent with appropriate laws and regulations.
Committee Charge
- Regularly review AGU Bylaws to ensure their appropriateness, currency and alignment with organizational strategic priorities;
- Review any Bylaws changes proposed by other individuals and entities;
- Forward recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding any proposed changes;
- Review the organizational and/or governing documents of Sections, Focus Groups, and other organizational components of AGU to ensure that such documents do not conflict with the Bylaws of the Union; recommend changes to the Board of Directors (and/or Council as appropriate) when such conflicts arise.
Work Plan for 2010–2012
- Review new Bylaws to address any potential oversights or omissions that may have occurred in the original draft (e.g., evaluate whether the Bylaws should explicitly stipulate that the Board of Directors should have final authority to approve candidates for AGU office put forward by the Nominations Committee);
- Continue to regularly review Bylaws and other governance documents to ensure that they remain current and appropriate as the Strategic Plan of the Union evolves.
Reporting Requirement
- Report on progress of the committee to the Board of Directors and Council twice per year, or more frequently as required.
