AGU’s Climate Communication Prize (working title of the prize) is a collaboration between Nature’s Own and the American Geophysical Union (AGU) to honor an AGU member-scientist for the communication of climate science including the promotion of scientific literacy, clarity of message, and efforts to foster respect and understanding of science-based value as they relate to the implications of climate change.

The prize will be awarded annually and will be presented at AGU’s Fall Meeting.  It will carry a cash award of $25,000.

Committee Charge

  • Select the recipient of AGU's Climate Communication Prize; the final decision is subject for approval of the Council Leadership Team (CLT).
  • Interpret the scope of the prize broadly and in accordance with the donors stated purpose for the prize.
  • Do not depend solely on unsolicited nominations. Although committee members are not eligible to submit nominations, they need to be proactive by encouraging nominations through committee member contacts. In doing so, be especially mindful of the diversity of individuals encompassed by the AGU community.
  • Conform with AGU conflict of interest policies and protocols for selection committees
  • State, as part of the prize recommendation to the Council Leadership Team, the number of candidates considered. Since this is a new prize, there won't be any holdovers for this year.
  • Define an objective and fair process used for reaching the decision.

Work Plan for 2011–2012

In addition to selecting the AGU's Climate Communication Prize recipient:

  • Work with Section and Focus Group committees to increase the number of nominations of viable candidates in underrepresented groups so that newly elected prize winners reflect the diversity of the Union membership; and
  • Work with the Honors and Recognition Committees to review formats for the award ceremonies at AGU meetings and to recommend revisions to award ceremony formats as necessary.
