The Honors and Recognition Committee is charged with ensuring that the AGU Honors Program is superior in all respects, recognizes all constituencies, and fosters a planet-wide network of individuals in the Earth and space sciences who epitomize excellence and cooperation in research, education and outreach.
Committee Charge
- Maintain oversight of the Union's honors and recognition programs at all levels—Union-wide, Section, Focus Group and committee;
- Regularly review the objectives of the medals and awards to make sure that they are well defined and that the honors ceremony and related activities are maximally effective;
- Review the nomination and selection policies/procedures to assure that the potential of honors programs at all levels is realized;
- Make sure that Section, Focus Group and committee recognitions of all types—as well as the associated medals, awards and certificates—are current, appropriate and balanced;
- Review proposals for new recognitions and suggest new recognition opportunities;
- Nominate Earth and space scientists for appropriate external awards;
- Review and make recommendations about appropriate program publicity to maximize visibility of the AGU, the program itself and the individual recipients; and
- Report on progress of the committee to the Board of Directors and Council twice per year, or more frequently as required
Work Plan for 2010–2012
- Examine past program data to determine whether the number and quality of AGU medal and award nominees is sufficiently high for vigorous competition;
- Based on the assessment of past program data, determine whether more proactive approaches to soliciting nominations of qualified candidate for awards and medals is needed; and
- Work with the Meetings and Fellows Committees to review formats for the award ceremonies at AGU meetings and to recommend revisions to award ceremony formats as necessary.
