The Outreach Programs Committee is responsible for guiding the Union's activities concerning 1) sound science-related public policy; 2) public awareness of the contributions of Earth and space scientists; and 3) excellence in science education and quantity/quality of work force.

Committee Charge

  • In collaboration with other scientific societies worldwide, ensure appropriate input to public policy decision making from the Earth and space science community;
  • Contribute to advocacy efforts aimed at increasing excellence in scientific research;
  • Support excellence in science education at all levels;
  • Support the growth, development, and diversity of Earth and space scientists;
  • Disseminate widely current scientific knowledge related to the Earth and space sciences, utilizing both the media as well as the AGU web site;
  • Enhance the public's awareness and appreciation of the critical role of Earth and space basic research in today's society;
  • Support members in their efforts to communicate effectively with the media, policy leaders and the public at large;
  • Ensure that AGU continues to be a recognized, authoritative source of relevant and accurate Earth and space science information for the national and international media; and
  • Enhance AGU's visibility through the promotion of Union activities.

Work Plan for 2010–2012

  • Develop a program overview for the next 5 years keyed to the new AGU Strategic Plan;
  • Establish near-term priority actions for next two years with milestones to gauge progress; and
  • Identify opportunities for the Development Committee to expand the financial resources for outreach activities.
