AGU Leadership

Although firmly managed by an experienced staff, AGU is very much a volunteer-driven organization. Much of its strength lies in the hundreds of people who volunteer their time and expertise to its success. They serve as the leaders of the Union.

The Board is comprised of the President, President-elect, immediate past President, General Secretary, International Secretary, Development Board Chair, six members elected by the Union membership, Vice Chair of the AGU Council, and Executive Director (Ex Officio). Two additional members may be nominated by the AGU President and approved by the Board.

The Council (chaired by AGU's President-elect) is currently composed of the President and President-elect of the eleven disciplinary sections of the AGU, the Chair and Vice-Chairs of the 12 Focus Groups, 5 Committee Chairs (Publications, Meetings, Outreach, Honors and Recognition and Fellows) and 4 Early Career Scientists.

The AGU has a strong staff, well respected by the membership and those in other scientific societies. They are charged with carrying out the programs of the Union within the financial and policy guidelines laid down by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer.

The staff and volunteers work hand in hand to achieve AGU's goals and advance its mission to serve our community, our science, and society.
