Sections and Focus Groups
Sections and Focus Groups reflect the scientific breadth of the Union. These entities are responsible for fostering scientific discussion and collaboration among members who affiliate with them.
Sections are the structures through which volunteers are identified and nurtured, and it is through Sections that the leadership of the Union rises and through which those to be honored in the science are identified. There are currently 11 Sections of the Union which perform many of the functions of disciplinary societies.
Focus Groups are critical for organizing and advancing the scientific goals of the Union. Each Focus Group provides a home for scientists in emerging research area. The research areas around which Focus Groups are formed normally span two or more of the AGU Sections and reach out to individuals in closely related scientific communities who may not find a home within one of the Sections. Currently, there are 12 Focus Groups.
Two leaders from each Section (Presidents and President-elects) and Focus Group (Chair and Vice-Chairs) serve on the AGU Council.
Sections
Sections let you connect with other scientists in your field of research area.
Focus Groups
Focus Groups connect you with other scientists engaged in interdisciplinary research that involves two or more AGU Sections.
