Associate Executive Director
A new position at AGU headquarters
An Associate Executive Director (AED) has executive level responsibility for a significant part of AGU’s activity and/or administration. As a part of a small executive management team reporting to the Executive Director, she or he will
- share responsibility for the effectiveness of headquarters, which has a staff of 170 and an annual budget of $30 million.
- assure quality support for the members who volunteer their time and expertise to Union programs.
- help develop policy and set organizational directions to meet goals and implement strategies approved by the volunteer leadership.
- work with colleagues in other scientific societies worldwide.
- interact with policy makers, funders of science, and interested members of the public.
The headquarters and all AGU activities operate in keeping with values and broad policies adopted by the Council of AGU.
Two major challenges underlie the agenda of the headquarters executive team: (1) to sustain and enhance the capability of AGU to provide, improve and expand needed services for the Earth and space science community at reasonable prices in an uncertain economic, technological, geopolitical, and regulatory environment; (2) to assure the staff at headquarters and the army of volunteers pull together in harmony to achieve the objectives and goals of AGU.
This Washington-based position is open to individuals anywhere who can work legally in the United States. Applications should include (1) a letter stating why you would like to do a job of this kind and how your education, scientific and management experience would serve you in this position, (2) salary requirements, and (3) a comprehensive CV. Review of applications will begin 26 May and will continue until the position is filled.
