Committee Charge

In the Union's bylaws, this Committee is charged with selecting from among the membership those individuals who should be honored with the designation of Fellow in recognition of their acknowledged eminence in the geophysical sciences. Unselfish cooperation in research is a consideration but not a criterion. The number of Fellows elected each year shall not exceed 0.1% of the total members. The number to be elected is based on the total membership at the end of the year preceding the year Fellowship is conferred. The election of Fellows is to be completed at the time of the Fall Meeting.

The selections of the Fellows Committee must be kept confidential until the President has notified all of the new Fellows of their election. A breach in confidentiality prior to that notification can detract from the honor. Failure to handle these matters with discretion could be damaging to the Union's reputation, and members could lose confidence in our ability to handle other decisions in an appropriate manner.

The deliberations of the Fellows Committee are confidential and must remain so. However, it is important that the Committee provide feedback to the Section and Focus Group committees on nominations that are considered promising but were not successful. The intent of this feedback is to improve future nominations. To that end the Section and Focus Group committees are asked to convey the Fellows Committee comments along with any suggestions of their own to the nominators.

The Fellows Committee may determine its own policies and procedures in order to meet its charge and goals in a manner consistent with the Union's bylaws, values, and other existing policies, procedures, and practices. Working through the Committee on Honors and Recognitions, the Fellows Committee may also make recommendations for the adoption of Union-wide policies and for enhancing the effectiveness of the Fellows program.
