AGU membership encompasses more than 50,000 individuals from over 135 countries. The goal of AGU membership is to unite Earth, atmospheric, oceanic, hydrologic, space, and planetary scientists by providing a dynamic forum for the geophysical community through scientific journals, meetings, electronic mail, a weekly newspaper, scientific and technical committee activities, and several online data and information services.
AGU is an individual membership society open to those professionally engaged in or associated with the Earth and space sciences. Membership and subscriptions are on a calendar year basis. Applications received after 1 October will be effective as of 1 January of the following year unless otherwise requested. Payment online may be made using Visa, MasterCard or American Express.

Grant programs
AGU has established and administers two membership grant programs, as follows:
- The Berkner Membership Program provides free, three-year memberships to individual scientists in countries striving to develop their geophysical sciences, often under the burden of low gross national product.
- The Lend-A-Hand Program allows Members to help their colleagues in countries with currency restrictions or low exchange rates. Through a gift of $40, Members provide a scientist with the full benefits of AGU for two years. Members may also donate AGU journal subscriptions. Donations may be made for a specific recipient or to fund individuals who lack sponsors.
