President's Message

16 March 2011

One of the largest earthquakes in recorded history struck Japan on 11 March, 400 km north-east of Tokyo. That tragedy was compounded by a resulting tsunami, the impact of which was felt across significant parts of the Pacific region.

AGU and its members join the world in mourning the loss of life and utter devastation caused by these tragic events. We extend our sympathies both to the AGU members in the region, as well as to all the victims and their families worldwide.

On behalf of AGU, I have issued a letter of support to Prof. Gaku Kimura, president of the Japan Geoscience Union. Read the letter.

The Japan Geoscience Union has created a special message board where members of the science community, including AGU members, can share their thoughts and condolences with their Japanese colleagues. Please send a letter (2011tohokueq@jpgu.org) to express your support in this time of great need.

AGU galvanizes a community of Earth and space scientists that collaboratively advances and communicates science and its power to ensure a sustainable future.
