Vegetated flow dynamics

This chapter presents basic models for flow structure and material transport within regions influenced by marsh vegetation, with emphasis given to emergent canopies that are more common in tidal marsh settings. The first sections describe models for the mean velocity profile associated with both emergent and submerged canopies. Several methods for the characterization of vegetative drag are discussed. The following section describes the nature of turbulence within a canopy. The final section describes the hierarchy of diffusive and dispersive processes that operate at different scales within a marsh.
