Ray paths of electromagnetic and electrostatic waves in the Earth and planetary magnetospheres

Various wave phenomena whose ray path analyses are essential for the interpretation of the phenomena are briefly reviewed, namely the whistler-mode, ion cyclotron mode, free space mode, Z mode, and the upper hybrid or electrostatic electron cyclotron harmonic mode. Then three-dimensional ray tracing techniques are summarized in both cold and hot plasmas. Some applications of ray paths calculated by the latest computer programs are also shown.
