Stratospheric equatorial dynamics

Observations of the main features of the stratospheric equatorial region are described, and our current theoretical understanding is outlined. The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and semiannual oscillation in zonal winds and temperatures are described, including time series and meridional structure. The impacts of the QBO on both the extratropics and the troposphere are covered and also the impact on tracer transport and distributions of ozone and other chemical species. Finally, observations and theory of the interaction of the QBO with the solar cycle are reviewed.
