Solar variability and the stratosphere

The absorption of solar radiation in the atmosphere is considered, focusing on its spectral composition as it travels downward through the stratosphere. The evidence for variations in solar radiative output is reviewed, and how these impact heating rates and ozone concentrations is examined. The signal of solar variability in the stratosphere, as found in observational data and model simulations, is described, and the mechanisms whereby these signals are produced are discussed. Finally, the potential for a solar impact on the stratosphere to influence tropospheric climate through dynamical coupling is considered.
