AGU's Digital Library FAQGENERAL What is the AGU Digital Library? The AGU Digital Library is a comprehensive collection of more than 100 years of Earth and space science research. The library contains more than 90,300 articles from journals and books and will eventually include an additional ~25,000 articles from books and the weekly newspaper for AGU. As of the library's launch in January 2008, all journals published by AGU, and in the case of one journal, by its predecessors, are available, except for International Journal of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy. Book titles and Eos will be added as ready. The entire project is expected to be completed by June 2008, offering subscribers unprecedented access to more than 1 million print pages. Anyone can browse and search the full library, and access to lists of journal articles and book chapters is available without a subscription. If you have any comments or questions, please contact us. What kind of materials are in the library? As of January 2008, the library contains all journals published by AGU, except for International Journal of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, which will be available soon thereafter. Hundreds of book titles and the newspaper, Eos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, will be added within a few months. Also, journal/book covers, front matter, and indices (e.g., author, subject, title, volume) will be added to the library's “browse” pages. How far back in time does the library go? The library starts with volume 1, issue 1 of Terrestrial Magnetism published in 1896. Does the library contain articles published today? The library contains articles that were published through 2002. Every year, the library will expand to include another full year; e.g., in 2009, content from 2003 will be added to the library. What happened to my back issues? Now that the digital library is available, the previous product offering issues back to 1994 is no longer viable. As of 2008, back content not included in the library, which consists of the previous 5 years, is available for lease or purchase. For example, in 2008, back content may be purchased or leased for 2003–2007; in 2009, for 2004–2008, etc. What features are available in the library? The library has many features. Many enhancements are expected in 2008, including reference linking, links to related content (comments/replies, corrections, special sections) and access to all historic supplemental materials. Searching will also be expanded to include keywords and index terms. Who has access to the library? Anyone can browse and search the full library, and access to lists of journal articles and book chapters is available without a subscription. Full versions of articles are available either by subscription or by single-article purchase. Nonsubscribers have the option of purchasing single articles ($9.00). Subscriptions are available to individual members and institutions. Note that articles in Reviews of Geophysics (1963–2002), Earth Interactions (1997–2003), and Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics (1994–present) are open and available without subscription. How can I subscribe to the library? The library is a new product in 2008. AGU members or institutions can subscribe at any time. How can my institution subscribe to the library? To be eligible to subscribe to the library in any year, an institution must have a current subscription to at least one AGU journal in either electronic or printed format. Details are available. Do I have to renew my individual (or my institution's) subscription every year? Where can I access the library? AGU's Digital Library portal is one of several entry points to the library. Access is also from the Journals or Books Web pages. Eos will be added in 2008. How do I log into the library? You will be prompted to log into the library when you try to access the full version of an article from either the article (or chapter) list or the open abstract. How can I download single articles from the library? Single-article purchase is available for all journals from the abstract of each article. Note that some books are currently embargoed. As they are removed from this status, the single-article purchase option will be made available for the articles/chapters. How can I search the library? For your convenience, there are two search options: Note that the search options will be expanded to include index terms or, for books, Library of Congress terms, by June 2008. How can I browse the library? What formats are required to view the library? JOURNALS How many journal articles are included in the library? There are currently 90,281 journal articles in the library (1896-2002) from Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems; Global Biogeochemical Cycles; Journal of Geophysical Research; Terrestrial Magnetism; Terrestrial Magnetism and Electricity; Paleoceanography; Radio Science; Reviews of Geophysics; Tectonics; and Water Resources Research. Not included in this count are Earth Interactions and Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics. Book chapter/articles and Eos articles will be added in 2008. When completed, the library is expected to hold more than 115,000 articles. What journals are in the library? All journals published by AGU are included in the library, except for the International Journal of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy, which will be added in early 2008. The complete journal list is available. For more information, see What kind of materials are in the library?. What is the journal lineage? The Journal of Geophysical Research's lineage is documented below. All other AGU journals continue to publish under the same titles as used at their inception, except for Radio Science (1966-present), which formerly published as the Journal of Research of the National Bureau of Standards, Section D, Radio Propagation.
BOOKS Why are some books not available for preview? It is expected that the library scanning project will be complete in early 2008. Titles will be added as they become available. Note that abstracts will be available for all book articles/chapters (see Why is there no abstract in the “Abstract”?), but, for embargoed books, access to the full version and the single-article purchase option will not be available. In the case of embargoed books, links to purchase the hardbound version will be provided. Does the digital library contain out-of-print books? Yes, the digital library will contain books that are out of print; these will be added to the library as they are ready. Why are some books not available in the library? Embargoed books are recent books and those books that are still in demand in the hardbound format. Note that abstracts will be available for all book articles/chapters (see Why is there no abstract in the “Abstract”?), but, for embargoed books, access to the full version and the single-article purchase option will not be available. Instead, links to purchase the hardbound version will be provided. Eos When will Eos be added to the library? It is expected that Eos will be added in early 2008. The library will contain all articles, including meeting abstracts; nonscientific content such as advertisments and notices will not be included. TROUBLESHOOTING Why is there no abstract in the “Abstract”? Not all articles have abstracts. This is especially true for articles published before 1949. For convenience, the library will be enhanced to include the first paragraph (a minimum of four sentences) of such articles to stand in as an abstract. The same approach will be taken with book articles/chapters. Note, however, that there are some exceptions, including corrections, editorials, prefaces, forewords, notes, letters, and geomagnetic and solar data. Why are affiliations incomplete on journal and article pages? Affiliations are sometimes truncated because of a processing error. This will be corrected when additional library enhancements are introduced in June 2008. Why is the article not in English? Terrestrial Magnetism and Terrestrial Magnetism and Atmospheric Electricity often published articles in languages other than English, including German, French, and Italian. The library contains articles exactly as they were published; translations are not provided. |
