Heads and Chairs of Earth and Space Science Departments Get Involved!

Since 1997, this forum has discussed important issues common to geophysical science departments, including research funding, program assessment, modernization of post-secondary curricula, increasing faculty diversity, and student career planning. This group meets jointly on a biennial basis with the Heads and Chairs of Atmospheric Sciences departments. It also holds annual workshops immediately prior to the AGU Fall Meeting.

Students & Teachers

For Teachers

Bright STaRS

Bright StarsAGU is committed to increasing the number and diversity of Earth and space scientists. The BrightStars program is a diversity program designed for high school students.

Workshops

AGU runs teacher workshops on Earth and space science at meetings. Geophysical Information for Teachers (GIFT) Workshops — held in conjunction with the annual meetings — allow secondary science teachers to hear about the latest geoscience research from the scientists making the discoveries, explore new classroom resources for their students, and visit exhibits and technical sessions of the AGU meeting for free.

2010 Fall Meeting GIFT Workshop

National Science Teachers Association (NSTA)

AGU sponsors both a Featured Speaker for the annual NSTA convention and additional speakers as part of the NESTA-NAGT-AGU Earth and Space Science Resource Day during the annual and regional NSTA conventions.

Earth2Class

Earth2Class (Earth to Class/E2C) is a unique science/math/technology resources for K-12 teachers, students, the general public, and geoscientists. It is a collaboration among researchers and an Earth Science educator at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University; technology integration specialists from Colégio Bandeirantes, São Paulo, Brasil; and classroom teachers from New York, New Jersey, and elsewhere.

Careers

AGU runs a career program offering career advice and job data.

MentorNet
AGU has joined MentorNet as a partner in a mentoring network that encourages diversity in the engineering and science professions. MentorNet matches protégés and mentors and provides mentoring advice, suggestions, and gentle reminders to keep the exchange going. This partnership makes it possible for AGU to connect student members who would like a mentor in the geosciences with members who want to mentor.
