Union Officer Roles and Responsibilities

The President shall perform all duties ordinarily appertaining to the office, shall preside at the meetings of the Council and at the general meetings of the Union, and shall appoint members to committees in accordance with the Bylaws. The President-Elect shall in the event of the absence or disability of the President carry out the duties of the President. The President-Elect shall succeed the President at the end of the President's term of office. The General Secretary shall be responsible to the Council of the Union for the general administration of the Union's activities as determined by the Council. The General Secretary shall be responsible for keeping an accurate record of the proceedings of all meetings of the Council, shall give or cause to be given all notices in accordance with the Statutes and the Bylaws or as required by law, and, in general, shall perform all duties customary to the office of a corporate Secretary. The General Secretary shall have custody of the corporate seal of the Union, and shall have authority to affix the same to any instrument requiring it; and, when so affixed, it may be attested by the General Secretary's signature. The General Secretary shall also be, and serve as, the Treasurer of the Union. In such capacity, the General Secretary shall have the custody of, and be responsible for, all funds and securities of the Union. The General Secretary shall keep or cause to be kept complete and accurate accounts of receipts and disbursements of the Union, and shall deposit all monies and other valuable property of the Union in the name and to the credit of the Union in such banks or depositories as the Council may designate. Whenever required by the Council, the General Secretary shall render a statement of accounts. The General Secretary shall at all reasonable times exhibit the books and accounts to any member of the Union at its principal offices, and shall perform all duties incident to the office of Treasurer, subject to the supervision of the Council, and such other duties as shall from time to time be assigned by the Council. The accounts of the Union shall be audited annually by a certified public accountant. The International Secretary shall be responsible for planning and organizing the participation of the American Geophysical Union in appropriate international activities, shall cooperate with the Sections in the international aspects of their programs, and shall chair the Committee on International Participation. |
