This is the home page for the Global Environmental Change Focus Group of the American Geophysical Union.

The shortcut to the Focus Group website is http://gec.agu.org

Scope:

"Global Environmental Change addresses large-scale chemical, biological, geological, and physical perturbations of the Earth’s surface, ocean, land surface, and hydrologic cycle with special attention to time scales of decades to centuries, to human-caused perturbations, and their impacts on society."

What's New (updated 29 January 2013)

New Officers Elected For GEC Focus Group

Congratulations to Professor Malcolm K. Hughes (University of Arizona Laboratory for Tree-Ring Research), Professor Rong Fu (University of Texas at Austin Department of Geological Sciences) and Professor Nadine Unger (Yale University School of Forestry & Environmental Studies), who were elected president, president-elect, and secretary, respectively, of the GEC Focus Group in the AGU-wide October 2012 elections!

They began their terms on 1 January 2013 and will serve for two years.

GEC Sponsored 86 Sessions at Fall Meeting 2012

The Global Environmental Change Focus Group was the lead sponsor of 86 oral and poster sessions at the 2012 AGU Fall Meeting. The titles of all of these sessions can be viewed on the Calendar page of this website.

Individual papers in these sessions can be found at the Fall Meeting's Scientific Program website.

February 2012 Issue of GEC Newsletter Available

The February 2012 issue of the Global Environmental Change (GEC) Focus Group newsletter is available on the Newsletter page of the website. The newsletter describes the process currently underway to nominate and elect new officers for the Focus Group. The newsletter also describes the search for volunteers to serve on several new GEC committees, the formation of new student groups within GEC and social networking links for the Focus Group, and a call from nominations for the 2012 Union awards and medals.

Draft Bylaws Posted for Comment

The Global Environmental Change (GEC) Focus Group Executive Committee has prepared a draft set of bylaws for review and comment by the membership. The draft bylaws can be viewed  here on the  Documents page of the website. Please send your comments to the GEC Executive Committee chair Don Wuebbles.

GEC Sponsored Stephen Schneider Memorial Lecture at 2012 Fall AGU Meeting

The Global Environmental Change Focus Group sponsored the 2012 Stephen Schneider Memorial Lecture at the 2012 Fall AGU meeting on Thursday, 6 December, 2012, 1340h-1440h, in room Moscone West 2022-2024.

Dr. Schneider, the Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies, professor of biological sciences, professor (by courtesy) of civil and environmental engineering, and a senior fellow in the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University, died on 19 July 2010 at the age of 65 while traveling in Europe.

Dr. Warren M. Washington, Senior Scientist in the Climate and Global Dynamics Division, National Center for Atmospheric Research, presented the 2012 lecture on the topic "The Transformation of Climate Models to Earth System Models and their Role in Policy Development and Decision Support". The lecture is available for viewing here on the AGU's Video-on-Demand website.

The inaugural Stephen Schneider Memorial Lecture, presented in 2010 by Dr. Michael Oppenheimer, Princeton University, on the topic "Scientists, Expert Judgement, and Public Policy: What is Our Proper Role?" can be viewed on the AGU video archive website at

http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm10/lectures/lecture_videos/GC33D.shtml

or downloaded at

http://www.agu.org/meetings/fm10/lectures/lecture_videos/GC33D.zip.

The 2011 Stephen Schneider Memorial Lecture, presented by Dr. Ben Santer, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, titled "A Tribute to Stephen H. Schneider and an Example of 'Setting the Scientific Record Straight'" can be viewed on the AGU video archive website at

GEC Sponsored Tyndall Lecture at 2012 Fall AGU Meeting

This annual lecture offers a historical perspective on global environmental change. The lecture is named in honor of 19th century Irish-born scientist John Tyndall FRS, whose measurements in the mid-century confirmed the significance of the greenhouse effect, which had been first hypothesized by French mathematician/physicist Joseph Fourier in 1824. The 2012 lecture was presented by Raymond Pierrehumbert, Professor of Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago, on Thursday, 6 December, 2012, 1440h-1540h, in room Moscone West 2022-2024.

The title of Professor Pierrehumbert's talk is "Successful Predictions".

The lecture can be viewed here on the AGU's Video-on-Demand website.

GEC Sponsors Special Lecture on Ocean Acidification at 2012 Fall AGU Meeting

At the 2012 AGU Fall Meeting, the GEC Focus Group sponsored a Special Lecture in Ocean Acidification: Consequences of Excess Carbon Dioxide in the Marine Environment. The lecture was presented by Kenneth Caldeira, faculty member of the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Department of Global Ecology (Stanford, California), on Thursday, 6 December, 2012, 1600h-1700h, in room Moscone West 2022-2024.

The title of Dr. Caldeira's talk is "Ocean Acidification: Adaptive Challenge or Extinction Threat?".

The lecture can be viewed here on the AGU's Video-on-Demand website.

Five Additional FM2012 GEC Sessions Available as Video On-Demand

In addition to the three lectures named above, five additional oral presentation sessions sponsored by the GEC at the AGU Fall Meeting 2012 have been preserved for later viewing on the AGU Video On-Demand website. These sessions, which can be viewed by clicking on the Video On-Demand link, include:
