would like to call your attention to a special session NG03
"Development and Predictability of Extreme Events in Complex Systems"
of the 2009 Joint Assembly (The session is sponsored by the Nonlinear
Geophysics group.)
The
session will bring together the leading experts in analysis of Natural extremes
and will initiate a broad discussion of the following principal questions:

What are the underlying mechanisms (physical, statistical, or phenomenological)
of extreme event generation?
Q2)
What are the common statistical properties of extreme events in different
spatio-temporal systems?
Q3)
What is the degree of predictability of extreme events?
