Announcements

  • Contributions to the NS Fund
As you renew your dues this year, you may want to consider making a contribution and designating it for the NS Fund. The types of activities that are supported by AGU section/focus group funds are: outstanding student paper awards (travel awards), subsidies for section social events at meetings, special plaques or medals, travel awards or support for critical/important speakers at meetings, etc. We plan to use this fund in the interest of student members and we welcome your suggestions how to put it to good use. We do not have much to spend since we are a relatively new focus group, but overtime and with your help we can build a fund that can have an impact on our student membership. Please note that contributions of over $120 will make you a "supporting member" and $60 of that contribution will go to AGU's undesignated fund.

  • Do You Want to Organize a Chapman Conference? If so, please contact the current NS Focus Group Chair Lee Slater, lslater@andromeda.rutgers.edu. AGU has set the nominal goal of having one Chapman Conference per year for each Section, as part of the mission of AGU. They therefore invite each Section or Focus Group to identify possible conference topics, and scientists that might be interested to propose and organize a Chapman Conference relevant to their section. See the AGU web site for more information about Chapman Conferences at http://www.agu.org/meetings/chapman.html

  • EAGE Passive Seismic Workshop: case studies and applications for field development and exploration, 22-25 March 2009, Limassol, Cyprus Passive seismic is an exciting, developing technology in the petroleum industry. The workshop will address advances in acquisition, processing, and interpretation for field development and exploration that have occurred since the first EAGE Workshop on Passive Seismic in 2006. Topics will include, but are not limited to: Hydraulic fracturing Reservoir monitoring Geomechanical interpretation Low frequency spectroscopy CO2 sequestration Enhanced geothermal systems Emphasis will be on case studies presented by oil and gas companies. Presentation of work in progress is encouraged. The Workshop format will be extended oral presentations consisting of a 20 minute oral presentation followed by 10 or 15 minutes for discussion. About half of the workshop program time will be allotted for discussion. There will be no poster sessions.
