Our science exists in a world of rapid economic, political and technological change. AGU must adapt to this dynamic environment to ensure we remain the preeminent scientific community members have come to rely on. This is the challenge for AGU.
You can help to meet the challenge by making a gift to this Voluntary Contribution Campaign. In the past, we've called upon our members to support major initiatives such as launching electronic publications and creating a robust student travel grant program. Our Union is stronger because our members answered these calls to action.
This year, the greatest need is unrestricted support. Unrestricted contributions provide AGU with resources to sustain and expand the programs and services our members have told us are most important. For example, improving AGU's communication with members and among members is a priority. The ability to participate in unforeseen partnerships is another. Convening as needed, impromptu conferences of experts helps to fulfill AGU's mission. Unrestricted contributions are essential to AGU's continued relevance and vitality. You can trust AGU leaders. They do not take this trust for granted and will always act in the best interest of the Union. You may also choose to designate your contribution to support specific AGU programs, and initiatives.
The Challenges for AGU
Captivate students early in their education.
Gifts to programs such as Bright Students Training as Research Scientists (Bright STaRS), Geophysical Information for Teachers (GIFT) workshops, and Exploration Station will support AGU's efforts to inspire school teachers and their students.
Increase the number of travel grants available to deserving students.
Students, particularly those from underrepresented groups and from outside the United States, need travel grants to experience their first AGU meeting. In 2008, 124 students received grants to attend the Ocean Sciences Meeting, Joint Assembly, and the AGU Fall Meeting. Our goal is to award at least 300 student travel grants annually. With a contribution of $1000 you can name a travel grant.
Ensure students and young scientists have abundant funding, excellent educational choices, and career development resources.
Students and young scientists require our support to sustain and reward their passion for the geosciences. Gifts to funds like the David E. Lumley Scholarship for Energy and Environmental Science, the David S. Miller Scholarship for Undergraduate or Graduate Study in the Hydrologic and Geo-environmental Sciences or the Sunanda and Santimay Basu Early Career Award provide critical financial assistance to students and early-career scientists who have demonstrated the potential for high achievement in a career in Earth and space sciences.
Support for important section and focus group networking opportunities.
Provide support for important section and focus group networking opportunities at AGU meetings and the awards sections and focus groups develop to reward excellence in their field.
Sections and focus groups need your help to build and enhance their activities, special projects, and awards.
Deliver unbiased, sound scientific advice that cuts through confusing data flooding congressional offices.
Politicians are bombarded with information from individuals and groups advocating for their narrow, vested interests. Gifts to AGU’s Capitol Cause support face-to-face meetings with AGU sponsored briefings on Capitol Hill.
The challenges we face have never been greater. But with your support, AGU will be a stronger catalyst for collaboration across science disciplines through programs and services that meet you and your colleagues' needs.
