Donor Spotlight: David E. Lumley

David Lumley

Shortly after AGU launched its 2009 annual voluntary contribution campaign, the Union's development office received an e-mail message from David E. Lumley about establishing a scholarship for a highschool student or undergraduate. Many scientific societies and associations have quite a few named scholarships, but for AGU this was a new concept. Lumley was sure of what he wanted to do and even more excited when he learned that his scholarship would be a first for AGU.

“I want to help inspire today's young minds to work on problems of global importance in both the energy and environment sectors of industry and academia,” Lumley said. Recipients of the David E. Lumley Young Scientist Scholarship for Energy and Environmental Science will be expected to present a paper and to participate in various student activities at Fall Meeting. “Meeting some of the 'giants' of geoscience and getting their feedback on research is a big deal for these young students. We sometimes lose sight of this,” he said.

Lumley contributed $25,000 to create a named endowment fund in support of the new scholarship. Students will receive a $1000 scholarship, a plaque that will be presented at Fall Meeting, membership in AGU, and a student travel grant. The first scholarship will be awarded in 2010. The selection process will be coordinated by Inés Cifuentes, AGU's manager of education and career services.

Lumley is the Woodside-Chevron Chair and director of the Centre in Petroleum Geoscience at the University of Western Australia. A member of AGU since 1988, he is a geophysicist with a focus on energy and environment applications, including prior research and operations roles at Western Geophysical, Mobil, Arco, and Chevron. Lumley has held adjunct academic positions at Stanford University, where he earned his Ph.D., and the University of Southern California's Center for Interactive Smart Oilfield Technologies (CiSoft). Lumley was cofounder, CEO, and chief scientist of 4th Wave Imaging, a geophysical research company purchased by Fugro in 2007. He was also recently elected first vice president of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG).

His secondary goal, to inspire others to create similar scholarships, recently met with success. Betsy Miller has decided to establish a scholarship to honor her husband David's lifelong pursuit of knowledge and education, and his innate ability to lead others to realize their own true potential.
