Sunanda Basu, Chair, AGU Development Board
Dr. Basu holds a B.Sc. in Physics from Calcutta University, an A.M. in Physics from Boston University, and a Ph.D. in Radio Physics from Calcutta University. She is a Senior Research Physicist at Boston College. She has been a member or chair of numerous national and international science advisory committees.
Carol Finn, Vice Chair, AGU Development Board
Dr. Finn has a B.A. in Geology from Wellesley College, and a M. S. and Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of Colorado. She is a Senior Research Geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey. Carol is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. She has served as member and chair of a variety of AGU Committees including the Budget and Finance Committee and the Statutes and Bylaws Committee.
Kai S. Anderson, Senior Vice President,
Cassidy & Associates
Dr. Anderson joined Cassidy & Associates after serving for nearly six years in the office of Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV). Anderson earned his B.S. in Geology and his Ph.D. in Geological and Environmental Sciences, both from Stanford University. Anderson works on a broad range of policy and funding issues, including energy, agriculture, mining, the environment, rural development, and higher education.
Andrew Castaldi, Senior Vice President, Swiss Reinsurance America
Mr. Castaldi heads Swiss Re's chief underwriting officer, overseeing property, casualty, IT, and catastrophe management operations in North, Central, and South America. Castaldi has collaborated with a variety of clients, universities, government agencies, and industry-related support groups on natural hazard related projects. He has an M.B.A. from New York University.
Carlos A. Dengo, Vice President, Geoscience,
ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company
Dr. Dengo has a B.S. in Geology and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology from Texas A&M. He joined Exxon in 1982. Assignments have included US/Mexico Geoscience Area Manager, Geoscience Resource Operations Manager, and Vice President-Technical, ExxonMobil Exploration. He serves on Texas A&M's Geoscience Advisory Council, Cambridge University Arctic Scientific Advisory Board, and as an AAPG Corporate Liaison.
Jagadish Shukla, President,
Institute of Global Environment and Society
In addition to heading the Institute, Dr. Shukla is a professor of climate dynamics at George Mason University. He founded the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies (COLA), and has been instrumental in creating weather and climate research centers in India. Shukla also is a member of the IPCC. He received his Ph.D. from Benaras Hindu University, India and his Sc.D. from MIT.
Anselm Smolka, Head of Geo Risks, Corporate Underwriting, Munich Re
Dr. Smolka received his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Geology from the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. He is the Head of Geo Risks at Munich. He serves at the editorial board of the journal "Natural Hazards" and is an ex-member of the Board of Trustees of the California-based non-profit organization GeoHazards International. He presently holds the Chair of the Governing Board of the GEM Foundation.
David Strangway, Founder, Chair, and CEO,
Quest University, Canada
Dr. Strangway has a B.A. in physics and geology, as well as M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in physics from the University of Toronto. He previously served as president and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation and as president of the University of British Columbia. Earlier, Strangway was chair of the geology department at the University of Toronto and chief of geophysics at NASA.
Stewart Taylor, Bechtel Fellow, Manager,
Geotechnical & Hydraulic Engineering Services, Bechtel Corporation
Taylor received his B.S. from the University of Kansas, M.S. degree from Colorado State University, and Ph.D. from Princeton University, all in Civil Engineering. Taylor has authored and co-authored over 50 technical publications and reports. He is a member of the Advisory Council for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Advisory Council at Princeton University. Dr. Taylor also teaches a graduate course in hydrogeology at Johns Hopkins University.

Rita Colwell, Senior Advisor and Honorary Chair,
Canon US Life Sciences, Inc.
Dr. Colwell has a B.S. in bacteriology and an M.S. in genetics from Purdue University, and a Ph.D. in oceanography from the University of Washington. In addition to leading Canon US Life Sciences, she is a Distinguished University Professor both at the University of Maryland at College Park and at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Colwell served as the 11th director of the U.S. National Science Foundation.
Marcia McNutt, Director, U.S. Geological Survey
Dr. McNutt received a B.A. in Physics, from Colorado College in Colorado Springs and a Ph.D in Earth Sciences from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The U.S. Senate confirmed McNutt as director of the U.S. Geological Survey in 2009. She previously served as president and chief executive officer of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. She served as AGU president from 2000 to 2002, is an AGU Fellow, and is the 2007 recipient of the AGU Maurice Ewing Medal.
Emeriti Board Members
Stephen J. Burges, Professor Emeritus,
Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of Washington
Dr. Burges has a B.S. in physics and mathematics and a BE in civil engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia. He also holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in civil engineering from Stanford University. Dr. Burges has been a professor at the University of Washington since 1970. He is an AGU Fellow, and most recently served as Chair of AGU's Development Committee.
Robert C. Cowen, Science Writer,
Christian Science Monitor
Mr. Cowen is science editor emeritus of the Christian Science Monitor. He joined the paper in 1950 and retired in 1995. He continues to write a science column. Cowen is past-president of the National Association of Science Writers and first recipient of an AGU award for sustained achievement in science journalism, named in his honor. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in meteorology from MIT.
