Jamie pic  A message from Jamie

As many of us once again prepare for the global
scientific crossroad that the Fall Meeting has
become, please remember the importance of the
Union as an organization and contribute to all of
its education and outreach programs, in particular
those benefiting the next generation of Earth and space scientists.

On 1-3 October, multiple stakeholder groups, from student members of AGU to representatives from government, industry, and education/outreach, met in a
strategic planning forum at AGU HQ to chart the Union's future. I felt privileged to be part of such a magnificent group. As the Union celebrates its 90th birthday, its future has never been brighter. A new era of excellence is upon us. Be part of it!

Welcome IBM

AGU welcomes IBM to the Union's growing group of corporate supporters.  The company sponsored a travel fellowship for Miaki Ishii, a 2009 Maclewane Medalist, to attend the first world Young Earth-Scientist Congress at the China University of Geosciences in Beijing. IBM also sponsored travel grants for students to attend the 2009 Fall Meeting. Many thanks to Development Board member Dave Jursik, vice president of IBM WW Deep Computing, for making this possible.

AGU also is grateful for support from ExxonMobil, Chevron, Northrop Grumman, and Elsevier for their generous support of student travel grants, the student breakfast, career luncheon, and GIFT (Geophysical Information for Teachers) workshop at the 2009 Fall Meeting. In all, 31 companies, agencies, and organizations are sponsoring activities at the Fall Meeting.

Inspirational members

edmond dewanThe family of a longtime AGU member has established the Dr. Edmond M. Dewan Young Scientist Scholarship for graduate students pursuing degrees in atmospheric sciences or space physics. Dr. Dewan was a physicist who worked for 52 years at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Mass. He was a member of AGU for 30 years. The family welcomes contributions from Dr. Dewan's friends and colleagues. For more information about making a gift to this scholarship fund or to discuss your philanthropic goals, contact the Development Office, 202.777.7483.
