Mercury On September 29, 2009, the MESSENGER spacecraft flew by Mercury for its third encounter with the Solar System's innermost planet. Acquired as the probe approached the planet, this image is the first spacecraft view of this double-ring basin, approximately 260 kilometers in diameter. Particularly intriguing about the discovery of this basin are the extensional troughs seen on the basin floor, because extensional tectonic features are rare on Mercury.
