The medals and awards of AGU are among the most respected in the Earth and space sciences communities.

Requirements for Medal and Award Nominations
- a letter of nomination outlining the nominee’s significant contributions,
- a curriculum vitae,
- a bibliography, and
- a minimum of three and a maximum of six supporting letters (at least two individuals are not to be currently or recently associated with the nominee’s institution of graduate education or employment).
For Macelwane Medal nominations the letter must include the birth date of the nominee.
The nominee’s age must be less than 36 years of age on 1 January of the year of presentation.
For the Falkenberg Award the nominee’s age must be less than 45 years of age on
1 January of the year of presentation.
