Statement of Principles
The AGU believes that any discrimination on the basis of race, gender, religious belief, ethnic
origin, citizenship, or political philosophy is incompatible with the advancement of science. It also
affirms the fundamental right of scientists throughout the world freely to adhere to or associate with
scientific activity.
Guidelines for the Application of AGU's Policy on Non-Discrimination and Freedom of Access
The above principles will apply to all AGU activities. This policy and following guidelines have
been developed solely to assure the non-discriminatory treatment of individual scientists with respect to
the programs and activities of AGU. They are not intended to be used to exert political pressure on any
facilities, organization, or country. Such political activity is not in the spirit of AGU's non-political
tradition or in accord with the Union's advocacy policy. Some specific guidelines are given below for the
meetings, publications and awards programs.
Throughout these guidelines, "discriminatory basis" refers to discrimination on the basis of race,
gender, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy.
1. Meetings and conferences conducted, sponsored or co-sponsored by AGU.
AGU will not deny access to or full participation in its functions on a discriminatory basis.
AGU will not hold, sponsor or co-sponsor functions in locales or facilities that by policy restrict
participation on any discriminatory basis.
AGU will seek to assist scientists who wish to attend AGU activities and are experiencing
difficulty obtaining any entry visa.
2. Publications of the AGU.
AGU will not discriminate in publication of material that meets all AGU criteria and standards
for publication.
AGU will accept subscriptions from and attempt to deliver its publications to subscribers in all
countries.
AGU vigorously supports the principle of equal opportunity for employment. Employment
advertisements in any AGU publication will be accepted only from employers who state in writing that
they recruit, hire, and promote on a non-discriminatory basis, except that citizenship can be recognized as
a legitimate requirement for some positions.
3. Recognition Programs of the AGU.
No person will on a discriminatory basis be denied recognition by AGU for his or her scientific
accomplishments.
