LOWDERMILK
1941-1944

Walter Clay Lowdermilk, soil conservationist, born Liberty, N.C., July 1, 1888; died May 6, 1974. Ph.D., 1929, Univ. of California. Worked in China during 1920s reclaiming eroded lands to help avert famine. Employed in soil erosion services of Departments of Interior and Agriculture in 1930s. Elected to AGU in 1932; elected Fellow, 1962.

ADAMS
1944-1947

Leason Heberling Adams, geophysicist, born Cherryvale, Kans., January 16, 1887; died August 20, 1969. Sc.D., 1941, Tufts Univ. Geophysical Laboratory of Carnegie Institution of Washington, 1910-1952; Director of Laboratories, 1938-1952. Elected to AGU, 1920. President, Section of Volcanology, 1922-1924; Section of Seismology, 1926-1929; Section of Tectonophysics, 1940-1943. Received William Bowie Medal, 1950.

MEINZER
1947-1948

Oscar Edward Meinzer, geologist, born Davis, Ill., November 28, 1876, died June 14, 1948. Ph.D., 1920, Univ. of Chicago. U.S. Geological Survey, 1906-1946. Known for investigations of groundwater resources of arid valleys of western states. Elected to AGU, 1930; first President of new Section of Hydrology, 1930-1933. Received William Bowie Medal, 1943.

BUCHER
1948-1953

Walter Hermann Bucher, geologist, born Dayton, Ohio, March 12, 1888; died February 19, 1965. Ph.D., 1911, Heidelburg. Department of Geology, Univ. of Cincinnati, 1911-1940; became Head of Department in 1937. Columbia Univ., 1940-1956, specializing in tectonics. Received William Bowie Medal, 1955. The Walter H. Bucher Medal, established after his death, was first awarded in 1968.

MACELWANE
1953-1956

James Bernard Macelwane, seismologist, born Port Clinton, Ohio, September 28, 1883; died February 15, 1956. Joined the Jesuit Order in 1903. Ph.D., 1923, Univ. of California. Director, Department of Geophysics, Saint Louis Univ., 1925-1956. Elected to AGU, 1926; President, Section of Seismology, 1938-1941. Received William Bowie medal, 1948. The James B. Macelwane Medal, established in his honor, was first awarded in 1962.

EWING
1956-1959

William Maurice Ewing, geophysicist, born Lockney, Tex., May 12, 1906; died May 4, 1974. Ph.D., 1931, Rice Univ. In 1934, Bowie and Field persuaded Ewing to use new techniques to study ocean basins. Head of the new Lamont Geological Observatory, 1949. Elected to AGU in 1931; elected Fellow, 1962. Received William Bowie Medal, 1957. The Maurice Ewing Medal, established after his death, has been awarded annually since 1976.

BERKNER
1959-1961

Lloyd Viel Berkner, physicist, born Milwaukee, Wis., February 1, 1905; died June 4, 1967. E.E., 1927, Univ. of Minnesota. Byrd Antarctic Expedition (radio engineer and navigator) 1928-1930. Carnegie Institution Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, 1933-1939, 1946-1951. During World War II years, installed ionosphere sounder at College, Alaska; assistant to Vannevar Bush in Office of Scientific Research and Development. Elected to AGU, 1934. Received John Adam Fleming Medal, 1962; William Bowie Medal, 1967. Lloyd Berkner Memorial Fund established in his honor.
