Excellence in Geophysical Education Award

Excellence in Geophysical Education Award - is awarded yearly to recognize and honor an individual, team, or group of individuals who have exhibited a sustained commitment to excellence in geophysical education. Such a commitment may be evidenced by, but not restricted to, such accomplishments as:

The awardee receives recognition during the AGU Joint Assembly, where the award is presented. Nominations must be received by 15 October 2009.

International Award

International Award - seeks to recognize an individual scientist or a small team for making an outstanding contribution to furthering the Earth and space sciences and using science for the benefit of society in less favored nations.

The award is open to all regardless of nationality or citizenship. Nominees must be living at the time of their nomination. Any individual or small group working together in the Earth and space science community who has contributed substantially to the understanding or development of our science across national boundaries is eligible for this award. Priority will be given to individuals.

Athelstan Spilhaus Award

Athelstan Spilhaus Award - is to recognize and honor AGU members for enhancement of the public understanding of Earth and space sciences.

Anyone may nominate an AGU member for the Spilhaus Award. The nomination shall consist of a letter describing the extent and nature of the nominee's activity and its impact, three supporting letters from persons (not necessarily AGU members) in a position to evaluate the importance of the activity, and any available documentation that would help the selection committee in its consideration of the nomination. If any of the nomination materials are not in English, an English guide or translation sufficient to convey the import of the work must be provided. These materials must be submitted in six copies, with the exception of the supporting documentation, if it is too unwieldy or expensive to do so. In the latter case, one copy should be provided, which will be circulated to committee members.

The selection committee is appointed by the President of AGU with at least one committee member a professional in public understanding activities. At least half of the members should be rotated off this committee each 2 years.
