The Earth-Moon-Mars Radiation Environment Module
As NASA gears up to return humans to the Moon and later send them to Mars, completely characterizing time-dependent radiation exposure beyond low-Earth orbit is becoming increasingly critical. Papers in this section describe an emerging system of coupled models (the Earth-Moon-Mars Radiation Environment Module) that characterize particle acceleration and transport in interplanetary space, secondary transport through shielding materials, and dose estimates in human tissue.

Space Weather Effects on GPS (Global Positioning Systems)
Through this series of papers, scientists investigate disruptions to GPS signal propagation in the ionosphere, determine the feasibility of models and warning systems for GPS disruptions, and show how GPS data can be used to reveal the evolution of space weather storms.

Conference on Radiation Belt and Solar Energetic Particles
This special section contains a reviewed selection of papers presented at the International Space Environment Conference 2003: Radiation Belt Science, which was held in Toulouse, France, in October 2003. The articles contribute new information for practical purposes related to Earth's radiation environment.

EUROEM 2004: Space Weather Session
Based on information presented at the "Space Weather and Geomagnetic Storms" session of the High Power Electromagnetics Conference, held in Magdeburg, Germany, July 2004, scientists discuss programmatic issues, prediction and theoretical modeling, and possible biological effects of space weather.

International Working Group Meeting on New Standard Radiation Belt and Space Plasma Models for Spacecraft Engineering
Scientists present a detailed summary of talks given at 2004 workshop that reviewed the results of past modeling initiatives and identified roadmaps for the development of the next generation of standardized radiation belt and plasma models.

Violent Sun-Earth Connection Events of October-November 2003
Analysis of the major events of the 2003 "Halloween" solar flares and resulting geomagnetic storms are presented in a special section that unites papers from three AGU journals (Space Weather, Geophysical Research Letters, and Journal of Geophysical Research-Space Physics).
