Accommodations
The anticipated nightly rate for sleeping rooms will be between $30-$50 USD. Details regarding lodging in Puerto Ayora will be posted once a block of rooms has been secured. Most housing will be double occupancy. Meal costs will be about $30 USD per day. Local transportation is very inexpensive.
Because conference facilities, especially housing, are limited, the total number of attendees is also limited. The Galapagos Islands are remote, and many of the conference facilities considered primitive compared to those some scientists are used to. Hotels and food are not the same standard as those in large cities.
Housing will be included in the registration fee for the 7 nights of the conference. We may be able to offer opting-out of the housing for those who have their own accommodation, but we discourage attendees from obtaining their housing independently.
NOTE: Individuals who require medical facilities close at hand or are intolerant of heat should not travel to Galapagos. On the other hand, there are many advantages in holding a conference in the unique geologic and biologic setting of the Galapagos.
Travel Information
Participants are responsible for travel to Quito or Guayaquil. Most international flights arrive in the evening, and Galapagos flights depart in the morning, so an overnight stay is required; see hotel options [pdf] and contact Tom Poulsom, the local organizer, for reservation assistance at: tpoulsom@gmail.com. Note: The meeting ends on the evening of July 30; the earliest departure times will be on July 31. Flights from Galapagos arrive in Guayaquil and Quito in the afternoon, so international flights should be booked no earlier than the evening of July 31.
Participants who are not attending the pre-conference field trip need to arrive in Quito or Galapagos on Saturday, July 23. You will then fly to Baltra no later than Sunday, July 24. We have arranged for discounted flights from continental Ecuador to Galapagos; payment will be required with registration. We do not recommend making your own Galapagos flight reservations.
See general information [pdf] about the region.

Roommate Requests
If you are interested in sharing a room and don't yet have a roommate, AGU will facilitate that process. We are compiling a list of those who are looking for roommates and will send it to those who are interested. Potential roommates will communicate directly with each other to make their housing arrangements.
Please send an e-mail to chapman-galapagos@agu.org. Subject line: "Send Roommate List". Include the following information: name; gender; arrival date; departure date; e-mail address and any other details deemed noteworthy for a potential roommate.
While AGU staff will assist in this manner, attendees must secure their own roommates and sleeping rooms. Roommates are responsible to each other for contingency agreements, such as late arrivals, early departures, and cancellations, which will affect their shared costs.
Note on Field Work in Galápagos
Field work in the Galápagos, including collecting any specimens, requires a permit from the National Park Service. Permits require 5-6 months to process and the application fee is $1000. Information may be found at here.
