WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND

Much of what we know or infer about mantle heterogeneity is based on the study of ocean island basalts. A fundamental assumption is that interaction with the crust does not modify isotopic and incompatible trace element ratios, and therefore the measured ratios are those of the mantle source(s). This may seem entirely reasonable given that the magmas are erupted through thin, high density, mafic crust. However, it has long been recognized that many islands have well-established magmatic storage systems; some of these erupt highly differentiated liquids, and the complementary cumulates remain to contribute a degree of lithologic heterogeneity to the island crust. A number of recent studies have shown that crustal modification of ocean island basalts may be quite common. The question then arises, and which will be examined in the conference, is whether crustal contamination is simply noise affecting otherwise robust mantle signatures, or whether the characteristics currently attributed to mantle reservoirs reflect some combination of crustal and mantle input.

This conference has been designated to examine magmatic differentiation in ocean islands, and to debate the extent to which this may modify, or even overprint, primary compositional signatures from the mantle.

CONFERENCE FORMAT

Four days of scheduled talks are planned, beginning with an invited keynote and followed by 30 minute presentations (each to include 10 minutes of discussion). There will be ample opportunity for interaction, including a panel-led discussion at the end of each day. While the evenings are free, we also plan to run an informal late evening social gathering to accommodate further discussion.

LOCATION

This conference will take place at Melia Puerto de la Cruz Hotel on Tenerife, Canary Islands. This island is an excellent choice for combining spectacular field exposures with controversy about origin of chemical heterogeneity in ocean island basalts. The site choice is intended to underscore the importance of geology in constraining shallow level processes at ocean islands. We need to understand the reality of how volcanic systems at ocean islands work rather than simply interpret them on the basis of geochemistry and physical models.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The Melia Puerto de la Cruz Hotel is a First Class hotel located in the Tenerife North area and is close to the city of Puerto de la Cruz. This contemporary hotel is situated on a cliff amid tropical gardens, 200 meters from the beach and 1 kilometer from the village center. Air-conditioned rooms come equipped with private bath, phone and balcony or terrace (most with sea-view).

Hotel accommodations for this conference must be made through AGU. It is highly recommended that you make your hotel reservations when you submit your registration form for the meeting -- NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED ON-SITE.

Travel Dates: November 9 - 16, 1996 (Note: participants from U.S., going through JFK, must depart on November 9th in order to get to Tenerife by November 10th.) Hotel: (includes daily $130.00 per night (twin beds, double occupancy) buffet breakfast) $90.00 per night (single occupancy)

FIELD TRIPS

Two field trips have been planned for this conference (one is optional and requires an additional fee). FIELD TRIP PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE AND SIGN A RELEASE FORM FOR EACH FIELD TRIP WHICH MUST ACCOMPANY YOUR REGISTRATION FORM.

Conference Field-Trip

A field trip to the volcanic features of Tenerife has been planned for Wednesday, November 13th during this conference. Field trip participants are required to complete and sign a release form which must accompany your registration form.

Conference attendees will have the opportunity to get up close and personal to the volcanic features of Tenerife. Co-convener John Wolff and his team will lead this field trip which will focus on field evidence for heterogeneity and mixing in the Tenerife magmatic system, and lithological heterogeneity in the island structure. Field trip participants should wear stout walking shoes and be prepared for weather ranging from warm and sunny to cold and wet.

Pre-Conference Field Trip (Optional)

Dr. Matthew Thirlwall, who takes regular undergraduate field trips to Tenerife, will lead a 2-day excursion leaving each morning from the hotel at 9:00 A.M. on November 9th and 10th, and returning to the hotel about 6:00 P.M. The trips will study: the older basaltic volcanism of the island (ca. 3-8Ma) in the Teno Massif, pyroclastic fall and flow deposits of the Las Canadas volcano in southern Tenerife, basaltic volcanism of the Cordillera Dorsal (ca. 1 Ma) and the giant landslide valleys of Oratava and Guimar, and the Las Canadas caldera wall and caldera infill. Cost $60/1 day; $90/2 days. Field trip participants are required to complete and sign a release form which must accompany your registration form.

HOW TO REGISTER

All participants must register for the conference and make their housing reservations by OCTOBER 4, 1996. Complete and return the enclosed registration and housing form with payment, or e-mail complete registration information to AGU ( awhite@agu.org ). Registration fees for the conference are $285.00 for professionals, $175.00 for students, and $50.00 for guests. There are no one-day, pro-rated registration fees. Participant registration fees cover admission to all scientific sessions, refreshment breaks, accommodations, Welcoming Reception, and field trip to volcanic features of Tenerife. NOTE: ALL INTERESTED PARTICIPANTS MUST REGISTER AND PAY FOR THEIR HOUSING ACCOMMODATIONS AND CONFERENCE REGISTRATION FEE IN ADVANCE. THERE WILL BE NO ON-SITE REGISTRATION FOR THIS CONFERENCE.

WEATHER

Weather in November is likely to be hot (ca. 70F) and sunny in the south of the island and in the centre for fieldtrips. It may be the same at the conference venue, but it may also be cloudy with some rain (60-65F.) Attendees should bring shorts, swimwear, and suntan cream for the field trips.
