FIELD TRIP INFORMATION
Lake Bonneville shorelines and stratigraphy on Stansbury Island, Great
Salt Lake
Field trip leader: C.G. Oviatt
Friday, June 19, 1998
This will be a one-day field trip to examine some of the shorelines and deposits of Pleistocene Lake Bonneville on Stansbury Island in Great Salt Lake. We will look at gravel and tufa at the Stansbury and Provo shorelines, and diatomaceous marl deposited in off-shore sites in Lake Bonneville. The Stansbury Island location is one of the best places in the Bonneville basin to see stratigraphic relationships that demonstrate that the Stansbury shoreline formed during a lake-level oscillation early in the transgressive phase of Lake Bonneville (about 21 ka). Thick, massive tufa of the Provo shoreline (about 14 ka) can be reached via a short hike upslope from the Stansbury. Enroute to Stansbury Island we will stop at the oolitic-sand beach of modern Great Salt Lake.
If interested in receiving additional information on this field trip, please check the box indicating this on the registration form.
