CONFERENCE SCOPE
There is growing evidence that intraplate regions are vulnerable to earthquakes. This is indeed corroborated by the events at New Madrid Zone, Tennant Creek, Ungava, Kutch, Koyna, Latur, Jabalpur etc., which occurred in different shield areas of the world.
In several developing countries like India and China the problems caused by Stable Continental Region (SCR) earthquakes are very serious because of large population and non-engineered structures in which they live.
In view of the significance of the SCR Earthquakes, an AGU Chapman Conference on SCR Earthquakes is being offered at the National Geophysical Research Institute, January 25-29, 1998, in Hyderabad (India).
This conference will convene a group of seismologists, tectonophysicists, engineers, and theoreticians to focus on the database, mechanisms, and stress regimes of stable continental region (SCR) earthquakes. This group will assemble to evaluate potential mechanisms, repetitions, and pre-shock indicators. Field visits to the deadly Latur earthquake region and the Koyna Reservoir of RIS are being arranged.
Active researchers in this field and closely-associated disciplines are invited to submit abstracts and participate in the meeting. Abstracts should be submitted directly to AGU by October 15, 1997.
TOPICS TO BE DISCUSSED
- Mechanics of SCR Earthquakes in Response to
Compressional/Additional Forces
- Comparison of Stress Regimes of Different
Shield Areas
- Source Parameters of SCR Events
- Do SCR Earthquakes Repeat?
- Are SCR Events Preceded by Pre-shocks?
- Mechanical Consequences of Erosion of Highland in the SCR
- Possibility of Fluids and Resulting Variation in
the Seismic Stability
- Thermomechanical History of SCR
- SCR Earthquakes: Case Histories
- Geochemical, Geoelectrical, and Other Studies
Invited talks, as well as oral and poster presentations, will be followed by detailed discussion/interaction on all aspects of the earthquake processes within the SCR-regions.
