Berkner Travel Fellowship Eligibility Requirements

Students and young scientists from economically depressed and developing countries may apply for a Berkner Travel Fellowship for the 2008 Joint Assembly to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from Tuesday, 27 – Friday, 30 May 2008.

How to apply

  1. You are eligible to apply if
    • you reside in one of the countries on the Berkner Travel Fellowship list
    • you are currently an AGU member, and
    • your birth date is after 31 December 1973 or you are enrolled at least half time as a student in a degree-granting institution
  2. Apply via the Berkner Travel Fellowship Application form.
  3. You must submit an abstract on which you are the first author and the presenter. A copy of that abstract must accompany your application.
    Abstract submissions on the main AGU Meetings Website will be open 8 January 2008. When applying prior to that, please also insert your abstract in the application form.
  4. A supporting letter from your faculty advisor or work supervisor must also accompany your application.
  5. The application and a copy of the abstract and supporting letter may also be sent by e-mail, fax or expedited mail. All items must reach AGU by 18 February 2008, the travel fellowship deadline.

You are not eligible if you have previously received an AGU travel grant.

Important Dates

Abstract Deadline: Abstracts must be received at AGU headquarters by 5 March 2008.

Application Deadline: Applications must be received at AGU headquarters by 18 February 2008. Early submission of abstracts and applications is recommended. All necessary documentation must accompany the application or it will not be considered. Submission of your abstract with this application does NOT mean your abstract has been submitted for the meeting. You MUST submit your abstract separately either via postal/express mail or by electronic submission. Check the Web site for submission details. There is no fee for submission of abstract.

Please allow for sufficient time to obtain a Visa and note that the applicants from some countries must now apply at least three months in advance of their travel date.

Amount of Fellowship

The total number of travel fellowships is limited. The amounts will vary depending on geographic location and the recipient's other funding.
