| Description: | Metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, the large scale sequencing of DNA or RNA from a community of organisms, have emerged as powerful tools for biological oceanography. These types of sequencing projects allow for broad, deep and comprehensive analysis of complex microbial systems. The growing use of next generation sequencing technology has made metagenomes and metatranscriptomes widely available, but have also presented new bioinformatic challenges. Numerous new analytical techniques are emerging to help utilize and understand the vast amounts of information found within large these sequence databases. In addition, these tools are being used in a wide range of applications that extend beyond their traditional use in diversity studies (i.e. community bioassays, biogeochemical studies, climate change manipulations). We welcome submissions that have developed new analytical techniques or new applications for metagenomics and metatranscriptomics within the field of biological oceanography. |
