Special Evening Sessions
The Future of Ocean Biogeochemical Research
Monday, February 9
5:10pm-7:00pm
Town & Country Room
The U.S. Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) has been a major ocean program designed to study the fluxes of carbon and related elements and their controls in the ocean. This program is scheduled to end in about 2002. Even though we are just now beginning the synthesis and modeling stage of U.S. JGOFS, it is necessary to plan for the future. This session will consist of a few invited lectures which will focus on scientific questions to be addressed in a future major ocean program. The talks will be followed by extensive discussion.
Conveners: James W. Murray, University of Washington, School of Oceanography, Box 357940, Seattle WA 98195-7940, Phone: +1-206-543-4730, Fax: +1-206-685-3351, E-mail: jmurray@u.washington.edu; and Gus Paffenhofer, Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, University System of Georgia, 10 Ocean Science Circle, Savannah, GA 31411, Phone: +1-912-598-2489, Fax: +1-912-598-2310
Popular Science Communication
Wednesday, February 11
5:10pm-7:00pm
San Diego Room
Presenting science in an interesting way, while retaining accuracy, is the key to good science communication, which aims to take scientific concepts and results from jargon understandable only to other scientists, into the lives of readers, listeners, and viewers. This session will explore science communication, specifically science writing, in language understandable to a non-scientific audience. Participants will review examples of good science writing, "dissecting" the structure of science news and feature stories, and learning something of the basics of this craft. They'll have the opportunity to try their hands at writing a popular story about research being presented at the conference, and individual critiques will be provided to interested participants.
Convener: Cheryl Lyn Dybas, National Science Foundation, Office of Public Affairs, 4201 Wilson Blvd., Room 1245S, Arlington, VA 22230, Phone: +1-793-306-1070, E-mail: cdybas@nsf.gov
Future of Chemical Oceanography in the U.S. (FOCUS)
Wednesday, February 11
5:10pm-7:00pm
Town & Country Room
This session offers the community an opportunity to hear the results of a workshop on FOCUS that will be held January 6-9, 1998. A brief presentation will cover the purpose, structure, and outcomes from this workshop. Community input and discussion of the status and future of chemical oceanography, particularly with respect to the workshop proceedings, will be solicited. This input will supplement similar opportunity available on the FOCUS web-site, and will be incorporated into the workshop report to be issued in March, 1998. This report provides the NSF with a community-wide assessment of the status and trends in this disciplinary area.
Conveners: Lawrence M. Mayer, Darling Marine Center, University of Maine, Walpole, ME 04573, Phone +1-207-563-3146, ext. 237, Fax +1-207-563-3119, E-mail: mayer@maine.maine.edu; and Ellen Druffel, University of California, Irvine, Dept. of Earth System Science, PSRF 207, Irvine, CA 92697-3100, Phone: +1-714-824-2116, Fax: +1-714-824-3256, E-mail: edruffel@uci.edu
The Coastal Ocean Processes (CoOP) Program
Wednesday, February 11
5:10pm-7:00pm

This open meeting will inform the oceanographic community of the current CoOP process studies in the Great Lakes, planned process study on wind driven transport in the NE Pacific, and planned workshop on buoyancy driven transport. Community input and discussion is welcome.
Advances and Primarly Research Opportunities in Physical Oceanography Studies (APROPOS)
Thursday, February 12
5:10-7:00pm

This session offers the community an opportunity to hear the results of a workshop on APROPOS held December 15-17, 1997. A brief presentation will cover the purpose, structure, and outcomes-to-date from this workshop. Community input and discussion of the status and future of physical oceanography, particularly with respect to the workshop proceeding, will be solicited. This input will supplement similar opportunities available on the APROPOS web site, and will be incorporated into the workshop report to be issued in Spring 1998. This report will provide the National Science Foundation with a community-wide assessment of the status and trends in this disciplinary area.
