Reception at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps

Birch Aquarium, Scripps Institution of Oceanography THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT. Join your colleagues for a fun-filled evening at the aquarium-museum which is perched upon a bluff overlooking the Scripps campus and Scripps Beach. The aquarium and educational exhibits will be open during this reception. The aquarium, with its 50,000 gallon kelp tank, has over 3,000 colorful fish from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of Mexico and the Indo-Pacific. Outdoors, the man-made tidepool is inhabited by numerous local sea animals. Docents will be available to answer your questions as you tour the aquarium-museum.

Ticket price includes transportation, admission, and hors d'oeuvres. Cash bars will be available.

Shuttle buses will depart the Town & Country Hotel from the Atlas Foyer, from 5:00pm-6:30pm. Have your ticket(s) ready to access the bus; tickets will be taken at the aquarium. Buses will return from the Birch Aquarium from 7:00pm-8:30pm.

If you plan to drive to the reception from the Town & Country Hotel: Take the Freeway 8 West to Freeway 5 North to La Jolla Village Drive. Turn left. Then turn left at Expedition Way (signal). Parking is $3.

Gaffney II, Chief of Naval Research and commander of the Office of Naval Research, who will speak on "The National Ocean Partnership Program" and other topics of interest to all Ocean Sciences Meeting attendees. Popular Science Communication

Presenting science in an interesting way, while retaining accuracy, is the key to good science communication, which aims to take scientific concepts and results from jargon understandable only to other scientists, into the lives of readers, listeners, and viewers. This session will explore science communication, specifically science writing, in language understandable to a non-scientific audience. Participants will review examples of good science writing, "dissecting" the structure of science news and feature stories, and learning something of the basics of this craft. They'll have the opportunity to try their hands at writing a popular story about research being presented at the conference, and individual critiques will be provided to interested participants.

Future of Chemical Oceanography in the U.S. (FOCUS)

A brief presentation will cover the purpose, structure, and outcomes from this workshop. Community input and discussion of the status and future of chemical oceanography, particularly with respect to the workshop proceedings, will be solicited. This input will supplement similar opportunity available on the FOCUS web-site, and will be incorporated into the workshop report to be issued in March, 1998. This report provides the NSF with a community-wide assessment of the status and trends in this disciplinary area.

The Coastal Ocean Processes (CoOP) Program

• You must send written notification of cancellations to AGU headquarters.

• The full registration fee will be refunded if written notification is received at AGU headquarters by January 29, 1998.

• Between January 29 and February 5, a $20.00 processing fee will be deducted from the amount paid.

• Refunds will not be processed after February 5, 1998.

• Notification to cancel tickets for events will not be honored unless received 96 hours prior to the event. The meeting facility requires a final guarantee of attendance for each event.
