Postdoctoral Appointments in Interdisciplinary Oceanography
The Center for Marine Science and Technology (CMAST) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in physical oceanography and fish population dynamics. Under the leadership of Brian J. Rothschild, Avijit Gangopadhyay and James Bisagni, CMAST has a joint program with the Harvard Oceanography group, directed by Allan R. Robinson, designed to understand the relationships among ocean dynamics, ocean productivity, and temporal and spatial aspects of plankton and fish population dynamics. We seek two postdoctoral oceanographers who have experience and/or interest in such areas as continental shelf modeling, assimilation of in situ and remotely sensed data, and modeling temporal and spatial distribution of plankton and fish abundance. CMAST has a strong group of interdisciplinary oceanographers working in the physics, chemistry and biology of the ocean. Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Position
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences has an IMMEDIATE opening ( to be filled by April 1, 1998) for a postdoctoral scientist to carry out research in biological production of halogenated gases in the field (North Atlantic and Antarctica) and the laboratory. Oceanographic Computer/Research Technician
We seek an individual with an interest in the ocean carbon cycle to work with us on an anlysis of global ocean data sets. Our goal is to determine from WOCE, JGOFS, and other data the fluxes of carbon to and from the surface ocean mixed layer on regional and basinal scales. Qualifications should ideally include a familiarity with Unix, PC and Macintosh operating systems, the ability to write small programs (e.g. FORTRAN, Splus, Plotplus, Matlab), experience with working on large datasets, and a background in oceanography. Postdoctoral/Research Scientist
We seek an individual interested in synthesizing a diverse set of oceanographic observations (JGOFS, WOCE, OACES) into an integrated model of carbon cycling. Possible topics include linking carbon fixation and export in the upper ocean to remineralization and recycling throughout the water column, and developing algorithms for predicting carbonate and opal precipitation and dissolution. PHYSICAL OCEANOGRAPHER, Assistant Professor.
The Department of Marine Sciences of the University of Georgia's School of Marine Programs seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor for Fall 1998 in the area of Physical Oceanography. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
Savannah State University in collaboration with the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, University of Georgia, and Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, wish to fill a postdoctoral position to participate in a three-year DOE-sponsored study to develop molecular approaches for in situ identification of nitrate utilization by marine bacteria and phytoplankton in the South Atlantic Bight. Responsibilities will include both research and participation in the development of a research-oriented graduate program in marine sciences at Savannah State university. The successful candidate should have demonstrated research ability in environmental molecular biology or microbiology, and a background in marine sciences. Experience with probe hybridization and epifluorescence microscopy is also desirable. Teaching experience is also desirable, especially in a minority background. NODC Oceanographer Positions (Vacancy Number: H/NES/980019.SAO).
The Coastal Ocean Laboratory of the National oceanographic Data Center(NODC), National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service, NOAA, invites applications for three full-time permanent positions to be filled at the GS-9/11/12/13 levels. The incumbent's duties will include: oceanographic data ingestion and analysis; synthesis of scientific information from data; development of software for oceanographic data analysis; scientific synthesis, and Web dissemination from relational databases; limited field data collection duties with scientific projects contributing data to NODC; and outreach to scientific, marine resource management, and general public user communities. The incumbent acquires, accessions, documents metadata, formats, and populates data into relational databases. The incumbent analyzes time series and spatial distributions of oceanographic data to characterize oceanographic conditions. The incumbent fuses data, assimilates data into models, simulates oceanographic conditions, and interprets results scientifically to provide an integrated data and theoretical knowledge understanding of oceanographic conditions. The incumbent disseminates products and services using Web interfaces to relational databases containing data and derived scientific interpretations. The incumbent will have a limited participation in scientific oceanographic field studies to improve the quality of data acquired by NODC. The incumbent will interact with NODC's user community by publishing scientific papers, attending scientific conferences, cooperating with marine resource mangers to develop problem specific decision support systems, and participate in public relations activities. ASSISTANT OCEANOGRAPHER
An opening for an assistant oceanographer is anticipated begining in May at the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. The initial appointment will be for one year, but continuation of the apointment beyond the first year is possible. The laboratory is located in Ann Arbor, MI and is part of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. Department of Commerce. The successful applicant will assist in conducting research programs studying sediment transport processes in the Great Lakes and other coastal regions. Duties will include particpation in cruises on the Great Lakes to deploy and retrieve instrumented moorings, ship-board data collection, and data analysis. Applicants must be willing to spend time on-board ship and be physically able to assist in ship- board operations.Applicants should have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in oceanography or a related subject, plus at least one year of graduate study or related work experience; a master's degree in oceanography and/or prior experience in sediment transport studies is preferred. Desired skills include experience using Matlab and Unix, the ability to program in Fortran or C++, training in statistics, and experience in ship-board data collection. Salary will depend upon qualifications but will be between $20,000 and $27,000.

Wanted: Research Associate -- Physical Oceanography.
As part of the interdisciplinary Canadian GLOBEC program, a team of investigators will measure the turbulent mixing on the Nova Scotia Shelf. A research Associate is required to play a major role in the fieldwork and analysis, and to work directly with the other team members relating the observations to the circulation, the feeding measurements, and the modeling results. A recent Ph.D. or M.Sc. in physical oceanography or quantitative biological oceanography is required. Experience in seagoing oceanographic field operations, electronic instrumentation, and quantitative data analysis is essential. Demonstrated ability to work with tools such as Matlab, Windows, Unix, DOS, and scientific programming languages is desirable. Familiarity with turbulence theory and measurement/interpretation of turbulence observations is highly desirable.
The appointment is initially for one year, beginning June, 1998 with extension to two years subject to available funds and satisfactory performance. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
