Sandia National Laboratories - All Postions
Sandia National Laboratories (Carlsbad) is the scientific advisor to the Department of Energy (DOE) for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The WIPP is a deep-geologic repository for defense-related, transuranic waste. The repository is located underground in a Permian bedded-salt formation 26 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Sandia's responsibilities include experimental laboratory and field investigations, monitoring repository performance, and modeling the long-term performance of the repository. Sandia National Laboratories has four positions available at the Carlsbad, NM location.
Opportunities:
Experimental Geochemistry
An experienced geochemist or chemist is needed for a permanent full-time staff position to carry out low-temperature, laboratory studies of the chemical behavior of the contents of WIPP disposal rooms (brine, iron, CO2, evaporite minerals and the MgO engineered barrier). The individual selected for this position will design and conduct laboratory experiments, interpret and document results consistent with stringent quality-assurance requirements and help incorporate results into probabilistic performance assessment models. An advanced degree in geochemistry or chemistry is required.

All positions require demonstrated excellence in the technical field, a strong commitment to quality assurance, excellent oral and written communications skills, and the ability to function effectively on a diverse team.

To Apply: Mail or fax curriculum vitae to David Kessel, Manager Performance Assessment, Sandia National Laboratories, 4100 National Parks Highway, Carlsbad, NM 88220 Fax 505-234-0123.

Geochemistry Modeling
An experienced geochemical modeler is needed for a permanent full-time staff position to incorporate the results from experimental studies into performance assessment models and to develop new modeling approaches to enhance the resolution of the repository system models. Experience with reactive transport models, thermodynamic models and geochemical modeling codes such as EQ 3/6 or PHREEQC is highly desired. Experience with finite difference numerical methods and high performance computing environments is desirable. An advanced degree in geochemistry, chemistry, or chemical engineering is required.

Geomechanical Modeling
An experienced geomechanical or structural modeler is needed for a permanent full-time staff position to support analyses of the mechanical behavior of the underground repository. A background in geotechnical systems, rock mechanics, and constitutive model development and implementation is required. Proficiency with finite element modeling is required, and experience with finite difference numerical methods, repository sciences, the petroleum industry, and high performance computing environments is desirable. An advanced degree in rock mechanics, geomechanics or related area is required.

Performance Assessment Modeling
A permanent full-time staff member with skills in numerical modeling of complex physical systems is needed for the WIPP Performance Assessment (PA) group. The EPA certification for the WIPP is supported by an extensive performance assessment (PA) carried out by Sandia National Laboratories. The WIPP PA is a probabilistic characterization of the likelihood and consequences of different futures occurring at the WIPP site over the 10,000 year regulatory period. The position will involve developing and implementing appropriate conceptual models, selecting and modifying appropriate numerical codes, conducting simulations, and presenting results to internal and external customers. Experience with finite difference numerical methods and programming skills (e.g., FORTRAN, C, C++) using UNIX, LINUX or VMS operating systems, and proficiency with desktop computing platforms is required. Experience with reactive transport, repository sciences and the petroleum industry is desirable.
