Top of PageWhat does the general public think about the problems that AGU scientists study? To answer this question, AGU's Public Information Committee worked with Public Agenda, a New York based research and education institution, to review existing survey research literature and also to conduct five focus groups around the country. At this session, John Immerwahr, Academic Vice President of Villanova University and Senior Research Fellow of Public Agenda, presents the results of this study.
The research suggests there is a high level of concern for topics such as the environment and global warming, but that public concern about these issues is decreasing. The report focuses on four specific areas: global warming, water availability, space research, and earthquake research. The focus group's findings suggest that people are not so much apathetic about these issues as they are frustrated. Sources of this frustration include a feeling that scientists themselves disagree about the issues and a widespread sense that the causes of geophysical problems are human behaviors or natural forces over which we have no control. As a result, public opinion tends to be fatalistic rather than pragmatic. The research also suggests that many of the ways we typically communicate with the public about geophysical issues increase the level of frustration rather than engage public interest.
Space Physics and Aeronomy Section Agency Night
Thursday, June 3
5:15 P.M.-6:30 P.M.
Hynes Convention Center, Room 207
George Withbroe (NASA) and Rich Behnke (National Science Foundation) will talk with section members about plans and directions for their respective agencies and programs and how these will affect the research community. George Withbroe's talk is entitled "Discussion of Solar Terrestrial Probes."
A Framework for Reassessment of Basic Research and Educational Priorities in Hydrologic Sciences for NSF-GEO 2000
Thursday, June 3
5:15 P.M.-6:15 P.M.
Hynes Convention Center, Room 206
The Geosciences Directorate at the National Science Foundation (NSF) has undertaken a planning initiative known as GEO 2000 to develop research and budget priorities for the first decade of the new millennium. A GEO 2000 document is under preparation and can be viewed at the NSF Web site. Those of us in hydrologic sciences have been given an opportunity to develop a "concept paper" that expresses a broad and exciting vision for the growth of hydrologic sciences into the 21st century.
During January, a draft paper by Vijay Gupta was circulated among several hundred hydrologists and people from other related sciences. A workshop was convened January 31, 1999, in Albuquerque, NM, in which these comments and other issues were discussed to produce a second generation of the concept paper.
This session, chaired by Vijay Gupta and Douglas James, will share these findings with the hydrology community and to seek further input. There will be a panel discussion in which the workshop steering committee (Victor Baker, Dan Cayan, Kosta Georgakakos, Diane McKnight, Gary Sposito, and Claire Welty) will serve as panelists. The final concept paper will serve as a basis for recommendations to the NSF-GEO directorate.
NSF-GEO Vision 2000 Town Meeting
Thursday, June 3
6:15 P.M.-7:15 P.M.
Hynes Convention Center, Room 210
The National Science Foundation's Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) is undertaking a major long-range planning effort to develop a vision of the cutting-edge issues for the geosciences during the first decade of the 21st century. The focus of "NSF Geosciences Beyond 2000: A Window on the First Decade" is to develop a comprehensive view of the sciences for planet Earth and the scope of programs and activities that GEO should address during the period 2001 to 2010. The vision will identify new scientific areas to address, the balance between research (science and facilities), education and outreach activities, the required enabling technologies and facilities, and the organization and management strategies best suited to achieve the vision.
This effort is cochaired by Dr. Robert Corell, Assistant Director for Geosciences, and Dr. Richard Greenfield, Division Director for Atmospheric Sciences, with representation from the Divisions of Earth and Ocean Sciences. GEO 2000 will be developed through extensive input from the geosciences community, including the GEO 2000 Working Group, the Advisory Committee for the Geosciences, outreach activities such as GEO 2000 Town Meetings scheduled for the professional society meetings, and comments via the NSF Web site or via e-mail: geo@nsf.gov.
