The Upper Atmospheric Physics Branch of the Naval Research Laboratory's E.O. Hulburt Center for Space Research is now soliciting applications for a unique opportunity to perform research in ultraviolet remote sensing of the ionosphere and thermosphere. The successful applicant will support the STP 91-1 ARGOS mission, launched on February 23 of this year. Consistent with the history of NRL, this is a project which features pioneering research in the aeronomy and spectroscopy of the upper atmosphere. The Branch staff includes experts in the physics of the upper atmosphere and the mesosphere, while the Hulburt Center and NRL feature world class collaborators in solar and magnetospheric physics, respectively. The position will involve development, refinement, and application of detailed models and state-of-the-art spectroscopic inversion techniques for retrieval of key ionospheric and thermospheric parameters. The interpretation of the measured composition in the context of the solar and magnetospheric drivers of the upper atmosphere will receive heavy emphasis. The responsibilities of the position also include developing, coordinating and analyzing cooperative ground-based measurements for calibration and validation of the ARGOS measurements.
Knowledge of ionospheric and thermospheric physics and experience in modeling those regions would give applicants a definite advantage. In addition, the successful applicant will be sufficiently flexible to extend his or her expertise in the core areas of upper atmospheric spectroscopy and aeronomy.
The appointment will be made at either the Post Doctoral Research level or at the GS-12/13 federal employment level, depending on qualifications. The applicant must have a Ph.D. or have equivalent experience, and must be a US citizen.
