1998 Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting
Taipei, Taiwan
July 21-24 1998
(Tuesday through Friday)

Taipei

Meeting Venue

The meeting will be held at the Taipei Convention Center.

Taipei is a city with a modern face, yet full of tradition and history. Where rice paddies
stretched for miles 30 years ago are now glass-faced high-rise office buildings, luxury
condominiums, and modern department stores towered above wide, tree-lined boulevards.

Taiwan's Tourism Bureau operates a Tourist Information Hot Line which provides a wide
range of assistance, in Chinese and English, on travel to Taiwan. Information in languages other
than Chinese and English is available, if needed. The Hot Line operates daily from 8:00 a.m. to
8:00 p.m. (Taipei time). The telephone number is +886-2-717-3737.

Climate

Taiwan's climate is subtropical, with average annual temperature of 21.7 C (71.2F) in the
north and 24.1 C (75.7F) in the south. The rainy season, in May and June, typically heralds the
start of summer. Summers, which last from May through September, are usually hot and humid
with daytime temperatures from 27 to 35 C (in the 80s and 90s F). In general, visitors should
wear lightweight clothing in July.

Languages

Mandarin Chinese is the official language in Taiwan, though other dialects are also spoken. Many people can speak
some English, but most taxi drivers do not speak English.

Electricity and Water

Electricity current is 110 volts, 60 cycles, AC. Drinking water served at hotels and
restaurants is distilled or boiled.

Currency

The Republic of China's unit of currency is the New Taiwan dollar (NT$). Foreign
currencies can be exchanged at government-designated and private banks and hotels. Major
credit cards are accepted and travelers' checks may be cashed at some tourist-oriented businesses
and by room guests at most international hotels.

Tipping

The standard tip is about NT$50 per piece of luggage. A 10% service charge is
automatically added to room rates and meals. All other tipping is optional.

Business Hours

Banks are open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to
noon on Saturday. Government offices are open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 1:30
p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday.
Department stores are open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and most other stores are open from 9-10 a.m. to 9-10 p.m.

Insurance Coverage

Participants traveling from the U.S. may wish to purchase accident and medical insurance
protection during their visit to Taipei. Seabury and Smith, an association service organization,
offers coverage for international travel. Insurance must be purchased for a minimum of 15 days,
up to a maximum of 60 days. Prices will vary depending upon the individual's age and choice of
benefit package. For more information, contact Seabury and Smith at +1-202-457-6842.

Pre-Meeting Field Trip

The Local Organizing Committee has developed a scientific tour entitled:

Collision Tectonics in Taiwan

Reservations for this tour must be made in advance on the registration form and payment must be received in full. The deadline for reservation is June 5, 1998. Cancellations will be accepted up until June 15, 1998.

Leaders: Hao-Tsu Chu, T. Frank Yang, and Tim Byrne
Duration: 4 days and 3 nights
Age of Strata: Late Paleozoic to Holocene
Participation: 15 minimum, 45 maximum

Cost: US$400 for double room accommodations. Those requiring a single room accommodation must add an additional US$100. Costs include accommodations in a standard hotel with private facilities, meals and transportation. Field trip will leave from a hotel in Taipei at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, July 17th. Details will be mailed to conference participants.

Description: The island of Taiwan provides one of the world's best natural laboratories for studying orogenic processes. Plate convergence between the Phillippines Sea plate and the Chinese continental margin has resulted in an active arc-continent collision in the south and an active arc-backarc system in the north; the island of Taiwan straddles the boundary between these complex systems. In addition, the combination of relatively fast convergence, and rapid uplift and denudation rates makes Taiwan an ideal location for illustrating orogenic processes. This 4-day field excursion will cross the orogen from the active fold-and-thrust in the west to the colliding magmatic arc in the east and will provide ample opportunities for observing and studying the products of this active orogen.

Itinerary:

Rigor: This excursion is reasonably comfortable. All vehicles are air-conditioned. Occasionally, there are short walks to the outcrop arc. Maximum elevation of 2,450 meters will be attained during the transection of the Central Range.

Special Requirements: Layered clothing is recommended such as light cotton field clothes or something warm with wind and rain protection. Mineral water will be provided during the trip.

Climate: The island of Taiwan in July is hot and humid. Most days will be pleasant in the mountain area; however, typhoons and rain can present unpleasant weather.
