April 2011 | Volume 2, Issue 4

AGU congratulates its 2011 class of Fellows. The Fellows program recognizes AGU members who have made exceptional contributions to Earth and space sciences as valued by their peers and vetted by section and focus group committees. To qualify, the nominees must have attained acknowledged eminence in the Earth and space sciences. Primary criteria for evaluation in scientific eminence are major breakthrough/discovery and paradigm shift. This honor is bestowed on only 0.1% of the membership in any given year. The 2011 Fellows will be recognized during the Honors Ceremony at the Fall Meeting.

The deadline to nominate a Fellow for the 2012 class is 15 July. See nomination details.

The AGU Board of Directors held its third meeting at AGU headquarters on 27-28 March 2011. The key outcomes of the meeting are posted on the AGU website.
Following the Board meeting, the Mission: Alignment Project (M:AP) team met to incorporate the findings from the online member survey with proposals for three organizational issues: 1) affiliation/organization of the science, 2) honors and recognition/Fellows, and 3) Council role/composition. The M:AP team is finalizing their work so the entire Council can engage in a robust dialogue about the future of AGU. Read the full report in Eos (see About AGU, Eos, 92(16), 137, 2011).

Science Communication Training at AGU Chapman Conference

AGU’s Public Information (PI) department offered free science communication training for attendees at the Chapman Conference on Climates, Past Landscapes, and Civilizations, 21-25 March in Santa Fe, New Mexico. PI staff taught three 2-hour workshops during the week of the conference: “How journalists work and how scientists can (successfully) cooperate with them”, “Online outreach to the public: Using social media to communicate science”, and “Talking science.” At these seminars, the participants learned practical tips, from preparing and acing a media interview to describing their science in less than 2 minutes (and on camera!).
