Recognizing the impact investments in research and development have on economic competitiveness, national security and public health, President Obama's 2012 budget proposal—released 14 February—included strategic investments in Earth and space sciences, as well as education programs. AGU President Michael J. McPhaden noted, " . . . support for scientific research and engineering is absolutely critical to U.S. innovation and job creation."
Because an FY11 budget was never enacted, the government is currently operating under a continuing resolution (CR) that provides funding at FY10 budget levels. The current CR is set to expire on 4 March and the new CR being drafted in the House faces potential cuts of more than $100 billion, including the complete elimination of funding for an integrated NOAA Climate Service.

In early January, 18 editors representing AGU publications, including Eos, books, and journals gathered with AGU staff in San Antonio, TX, for two and a half days to discuss issues that all of the editors face. Among the topics addressed were journal metrics, dual publication, and ways to attract the best scientific papers. Barbara Major, Assistant Director for Journals, commented, "This meeting of editors is essential to overall strengthening the AGU publications program." Chris McEntee, AGU's Executive Director, outlined AGU's strategic plan, while Bill Cook, Director of Publications, presented an overview of the Publications Division. Another highlight was the the talk given by guest speaker Marie McVeigh, from Thomson Reuters, who did her best to demystify the aura of the Impact Factor. One outcome of the meeting that the editors gained was a better understanding of AGU's strategic plan and the role that publications play in its implementation. All agree that AGU authors, reviewers and editors are an invaluable asset to AGU.

Love is all around us. The sun emitted its first X-class flare in more than four years on February 14 at 8:56 p.m. EST. View an amazing video of the flare courtesy of NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. The solar flare is credited for resulting displays of aurora borealis in the days following the event.
