May 2011 | Volume 2, Issue 5

We tried something new: 5 AGU committees. Meetings timed concurrently. Opportunities to connect, gain information and collaborate.
At the end of April, President Mike McPhaden, President-Elect Carol Finn, and Executive Director/CEO Chris McEntee led a joint session for members of the Development Board and Governance, Meetings, Outreach and Publications Committees. Each committee presented a poster, participated in a leadership development discussion on risk, and learned about hot topics and emerging issues at AGU. The response was positive and we plan to do this again next year.

Geophysicist-AGU-member-astronaut Andrew Feustel walked in space for his sixth time yesterday, installing jumper cables and other gear on the International Space Station (ISS) with a fellow crew member of Space Shuttle Endeavor, which docked at the station on 18 May.  Earlier in the current mission, Feustel helped mount a particle detector called the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the ISS, where it will seek antimatter and dark matter. In 2009, Feustel also space-walked 3 times to fix the Hubble Space Telescope.

Science Funding Needs Your Help

Science funding in the United States is facing a crisis and the scientific community needs your help.  Reach out to your Representative and Senators during the upcoming congressional recess, when they will return to their home districts, to discuss the important role science plays in our society.

The next recess for the House of Representatives is 25 June—5 July and for the Senate it is 2 July – 10 July.  Step-by-step instructions on how to set up a meeting with a Member of Congress and talking points are available here. Contact AGU’s Science Policy staff at sciencepolicy@agu.org if you have questions.
