Improved measurements of sun to advance understanding of climate change
14 January 2011
Scientists have taken a major step toward accurately determining the amount of energy that the sun provides to Earth, and how variations in that energy may contribute to climate change.

Many Coastal Wetlands likely to Disappear this Century
1 December 2010
Many coastal wetlands worldwide, including several on the U.S. Atlantic coast, may be more sensitive than previously thought to climate change and sea-level rise projections for the 21st century. Scientists engaged in an international research modeling effort have made this conclusion in a paper published today in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.

11 November 2010
Geophysicists are drilling into an earthquake and tsunami origination zone below the ocean floor off the coast of Japan to learn more about what triggers these events. In the largest scientific drilling operation to date, scientists hope to collect samples from the dig to study any changes in tectonic plates that occur as an earthquake starts. Experts will also monitor activity up close with sensors placed deep below the ocean floor.

What can fossilized rodent poop tell us about ancient rainfall?
11 August 2010
Studying past climate in one of the world's driest deserts, the Atacama Desert, is not easy, since there are very few records that researchers can use to reconstruct ancient temperatures and rainfall. But now paleoclimatologists have found a trove of information in the form of fossilized Chinchilla rat feces.

What role do rivers play in the carbon cycle?
10 August 2010
To better understand and anticipate climate change, scientists are trying to determine where carbon is being absorbed and released, and how much. David Butman is a member of a Yale University team that has analyzed thousands of measurements to determine what role U.S. rivers play in the carbon cycle.
Scott Doney, Nominee for Chief Scientist, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
4 August 2010
President Barack Obama has announced his intent to nominate Scott Doney as Chief Scientist at NOAA. Doney is a senior scientist in the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). His research focuses on marine ecosystem dynamics and the role of the ocean in the global carbon cycle. He returned to WHOI in 2002 following 11 years in the Advanced Study Program and Climate and Global Dynamics Division at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.
