CAMERA READY COPY SPECIFICATIONS

(ONLY for 6" x 9" Special Publications Series)

ELECTRONIC FILES and HARD COPY

Please provide a hard copy and your text file on disk (MS Word, WordPerfect, or LaTex). Provide all figures an color plates as hard copy and electronic files.

TYPEFACE, FONTS, AND SIZES

Use a standard serif typeface such as Times or Times New Roman throughout. For symbols, use the font called "Symbol" only (other symbol fonts, such as WPGreek, or "special characters" in Windows, will not work).  Do not use underlined or boldface type.
 


TITLE PAGE

Do not use hyphenation or justification in chapter titles and text headings.

Title is 16-point type, Upper and lower case, and centered. Capitalize all words of four letters or more. Leave two lines of blank space after the title.

Author names are 11-point type, Upper and lower case, centered. Leave two lines of blank space after the authors’ names.

Abstract is 10 point type. Must be a single paragraph no more than 250 words long.

Do not include addresses or affiliations on the chapter opening page. A list of contributors and their mailing addresses will be published at the end of the book)
 
 

TEXT

Column width is 4.5 inches.

Indent paragraphs 1/8”. Do not add space between paragraphs.

Main Text

Use 10 point type. Use full justification on left and right margins. Hyphenate. Line spacing: WordPerfect: “single (or “1”) line space”; Microsoft Word: Use 12 pt. line spacing.
 

References

Use 9 point type. Use full justification on left and right margins. Hyphenate. Line spacing: WordPerfect: “single (or “1”) line space”; Microsoft Word: “11 pt. leading”. Use hanging indent style, set for .125 inches (see sample). There is no extra space between references. All book titles or journals titles are italic, paper titles are roman. For paper titles, capitalize all words of four letters or more.
 

Reference Heading:

This is a Level 1 Heading (10 point type, ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, Centered).
 
 

FIGURE CAPTIONS

Figure Captions are 9 point type with 11 point spacing. Use full justification on left and right margins. Hyphenate. The word "Figure" and the figure number, followed by a period, are bold. (see sample) Line spacing: WordPerfect: “single (or “1”) line space”; Microsoft Word: “11pt. leading” The word “Figure” and the figure number, followed by a period, precede the text of the caption.

TEXT HEADINGS

Level 1 Headings are 10 Point Type, ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, centered, with 12 point or "single" line spacing. Leave one (1) line of blank soace after the heading.

Level 2 Headings are 10 point italic type, Capitalize all words of four letters or more, flush left;  leave one (1) line of blank space after the heading.

Level 3 heading. The word “Acknowledgments” in the sample is a level 3 heading. Leave one line of space above the heading. Type the heading in 9 point italic type, followed by a period. Text follows immediately after the period. Capitalize the first word only. Use paragraph indent (1/8 inch) as main text

Line Art figures (no grayscale): Provide as EPS files or as 1,200 dpi TIF files for IBM-PC

Figure with Grayscale and Line Art: Provide as EPS files or as 600 dpi TIF files for IBM-PC

Grayscale only (e.g. photographs): EPS files or 300 dpi TIF files for IBM-PC (Grayscale)

Color Plates: EPS files or 600 dpi TIF files for IBM-PC in CMYK color mode

Reduce all figures to their most economical size AGU staff will notify you if your figures are not reduced appropriately.

TABLES

Captions for tables should appear at the top of the table, centered. Each table has three rules or lines: one below the caption, one below the column headings, and one at the bottom of the table. Other rules for table captions follow the Figure guidelines. The type for tables should be 9 point, with any footnotes to the table in 8 point type and placed at the bottom of the table.
 
 

EQUATIONS

Built-up math should be displayed separately from paragraph text. Build equations from text with symbol fonts an superscript/subscript. Equations that are cited in the text should be numbered (see Eq. 1). Equation numbers, if used, must align with the last line of the equation, flush right, in parentheses. The equation is centered on the line.

Leave a line of space above and below displayed equations.
