AGU Member receives Nobel Prize for “Path-breaking Work”

Raymond Davis, Jr. was awarded the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physics by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences “for pioneering contributions to astrophysics; in particular, for the detection of cosmic neutrinos.” He is the first scientist to have detected solar neutrinos, the signature of nuclear fusion reactions occurring in the core of the Sun.

Davis is a retired chemist of the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York. He has been a member of AGU (SPA) since 1961.
