A non-normal filter is used to isolate the El Niño signal in tropical south Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs). In boreal fall, the resulting index is significantly anticorrelated with precipitation in the American Midwest two to three seasons later. The phenomenological reasons for the relationship are explored in this article.
